The Red Thread of Fate, The Invisible Link To Your Destined Partner.
Hi all and welcome to Spirit’s blog. Today is Folklore Friday, I figured we could discuss the Red Thread of Fate. This tale originated in Eastern Asia, particularly China, Japan, and Korea. The premise behind this tale is that two people are connected at birth by an invisible red thread. No matter what is done, this thread cannot be broken. This tale is associated with the God of marriage and love, Yue Lao.
The first tale is about a small boy walking home, he crosses an old man (Yue Lao). This boy asks what he is doing, in response he says he is looking at a picture of the boy’s destined wife. To this the boy becomes defensive and throws a rock at the picture of the young girl. Years later when the boy has become a man, is parents arrange a marriage to a beautiful young woman. On the night of their wedding the man notices the young woman wears an ornament over her eyebrow. He asks his new wife the reason for the ornament, to which she shows him a scar over her eyebrow. When asked the circumstances of the scar, the new bride replies that a young boy threw a rock at her, and struck her there as a child. Concluding that this is the same young boy and girl from the beginning.
Another story is of a young man who consults with Yue Lao, asking who he will marry. This young man is hoping for a rich girl, he is shown a girl walking beside an old, blind woman. These two are walking through a market place, looking disheveled. This man is angered by this telling a servant to kill…
