Ceres in Astronomy
Ceres is the largest celestial body in the asteroid belt, between Mars and Jupiter. Ceres is a dwarf planet that has a diameter of 945 km.
It is made up of rock and ice. Ceres also contains roughly one third of the mass, in the entire asteroid belt. Ceres was first discovered in January of 1801, by Giuseppe Piazzi, at the Palermo Astronomical Observatory.
It was named Ceres after the Ancient Roman goddess of agriculture.
Ceres in Mythology
In Ancient Rome, Ceres was the goddess of agriculture, grain crops, fertility and nurturing in a maternal way.
It was believed in this time that she was the discoverer of wheat. She was attributed with the traits of sowing, nurturing seeds and harvesting.
In Roman belief before her discovery and guidance, mankind survived on acorns and lived in a lawless society.
